He was the first editor-in-chief of The Marshall Project, a nonprofit organization that covers American criminal justice. He previously wrote columns for The New York Times, where he also held the position of executive editor from July 2003 until September 2011. He declared on June 2, 2011, that he would leave the role in order to pursue writing full-time. He was replaced as executive editor by Jill Abramson.
During the last years of the Cold War and the fall of the Soviet Union, Keller served in the Times Moscow bureau from 1986 to 1991, finally rising to the position of bureau head. He was awarded a Pulitzer Prize for his reporting in 1988.
