Stephanie Elam Biography / Wiki
Stephanie Elam is an American television journalist, working for CNN as a correspondent based in the network’s Los Angeles bureau. Elam has covered a variety of stories since moving to the western region. Elam oversaw CNN’s coverage of Hawaii’s Kilauea volcano in 2018 as a large portion of the Leilani Estates neighborhood on the Big Island was destroyed by its eruption. She arrived a few hours after the eruption started and recorded the lava’s unrelenting flow as it destroyed everything in its path. Within feet of an active fissure, she and her colleagues were able to take pictures.
Hurricanes Matthew, Harvey, and Irma in the Southeast, an EF5 tornado that killed fifteen adults and nine children in Moore, Oklahoma, and multiple wildfires in the West, including the Thomas Fire, which at the time was the biggest wildfire in California history, are just a few of the natural disasters Elam has covered for CNN. Elam has also covered the drought in California, the Cascadia Subduction Zone earthquake hazard in the Pacific Northwest, and other problems like subsidence in the central valley of the state. When the polar vortex moved into the North, bringing with it wind chills that felt like -44 degrees, Elam also traveled to Minneapolis. She also attended the 2017 solar eclipse in St. Joseph, Missouri, in spite of the pouring rain, which proved to be a popular event.
Elam worked as a general assignment reporter and weekend evening anchor for KNBC Los Angeles before joining CNN, Los Angeles. Her reporting at KNBC focused on disaster preparation, giving Southern Californians the knowledge they needed to be prepared for earthquakes, be safe in the water, and be aware of financial issues. She was on the desk when Whitney Houston was discovered dead in a hotel room in Beverly Hills, and she anchored KNBC’s breaking news coverage of the Seal Beach killings.
Elam was a New York-based CNN business news correspondent before relocating to Los Angeles. She also did a lot of reporting for HLN and CNN International. Elam covered a wide range of stories for the network between 2003 and 2011, including Michael Jackson’s passing and the collapsing housing bubble that caused the greatest financial crisis in decades.
