She has lived in all the glamor capitals. Born in Cleveland, raised in St. Louis, moved to Detroit as a high-schooler, and never left. Jill was lucky enough to start her broadcasting career there and has managed to stick around in the city that has become so much more than home to her.
She did earn her bachelor’s degree at Michigan State. She didn’t care. Jill went there on a track and cross country scholarship, and that’s what she put all her energy into. Washburn was super successful at that, but it also turns out that a career in running is not a good long-term plan.
Enter reality, which forced her to figure out a legit way to support herself. Washburn bumped around through numerous starter jobs before deciding that stand-up comedy was her calling. Beautifully, she was good at it. Who knew?? She traveled the country for a few years, working the road and honing her skills. It’s unconventional to develop speaking skills and a stage presence. Eventually, that led her to the radio world, and then to TV news.
About some years ago, she caved in and admitted that her art degree was not going to cut it anymore. She went back to school to study meteorology (online school) at Penn State’s World Campus. It goes down in history as one of her best decisions ever. She knew that she was way smarter better than she had ever given herself credit for, and found a field that she loved.
Along the way, her years of budget-friendly do-it-themself projects have spawned yet another incarnation of her, The Jill of All Trades one, where she shares her weird amalgamation of D-I-Y knowledge with viewers in a regular weekly segment.
